学園都市“ケンブリッジ”の人口は約10万、その中で大学人口は1万人を超える。
他にも多くの教育機関があり、英国の地方都市で、最も平均年齢の低い若者の街で、
落ち着いた学問研究の都であると同時に、活気溢れるロマンチックな場所でもある。

歴史的な街並みや、郊外に広がる田園は美しく、その中で青春の日々が輝く。
そんな若者たちの自然な姿を映像に捉え、約300点のプリントで一同に展示する。

The population of Cambridge is about 100,000.
More than 10,000 belong to or related to the University.
There are many more educational institutions in Cambridge.
The town is full of youth and has a lively atmosphere
that often provide a beautiful background to romantic moment.

The exhibition shows more than 300 photos of this historic town
and countryside, many of them are scenes with young people.

ヒーリング番組：美しい星空とアロマの香りのリラクセーション・プログラム

学園都市として、世界的に知られるケンブリッジ。そのすぐ近く、のどかな田園風景が
広がる村グランチェスターは、今も昔も変わらぬ学生たちの散策コースである。
ケンブリッジ大学は「万有引力の法則」で有名なニュートンを始めとする
多くのすぐれた科学者を送り出しているが、それはこの小さな村の佇まいと
無縁ではない。ここには、都会に暮らしている私たちが忘れがちな
「ゆったりとしたリズム」が息づいている。彼らはこの豊かな自然の中で
思索し、議論を重ねてきた。そうした中から、研究室の中では
生まれない独創的なひらめきが生まれたと言われている。

番組では、この地で見られる星空や夕暮れとともに、詩人“ルパート・ブルック”が愛した
グランチェスターの風景、川辺の牧草地やリンゴ園なども紹介している。

グランチェスター（Grantchester)
-- 私をイギリスに引き留めたケンブリッジ郊外の小さな村 --

1975年、私はイギリスに旅立った。深い理由などなく、ちょっとした切っ掛けで、
広く世界を見てみたいと思ったのである。 1月の晴れた日、
初めてケンブリッジの駅に降り立った時のことを、今も鮮やかに想い出せる。　
その時は、ただの学生で、アーティストでも写真家でもなかった。
到着して間もなく、中世の面影が色濃く残り、若いエネルギーに溢れる、
この"学園都市"に魅了された。そして、しばらくこの街に留まる決意をした。

その年の晩春、私は友人に誘われるがまま、川沿いのフットパスを歩き、
ある村に向かった。その村の名前が、"グランチェスター"である。
歩き出すとすぐ市街地を抜け、広いメドーに出た。なだらかな丘を登り、
自然の川が緑の牧草地の中をゆったりと流れている光景を眺めたとき、
衝撃が走った。本当に、このような風景があるのだ！しかも、こんな近くに！
それまでは、絵の中とか、どこか遠く離れた場所にしかない風景だと思っていた。

その後、この街で、様々な運命の出会いがあり、滞在を延長するうちに、
学生からアーティストになり、イギリスの永住権を得て、今日もケンブリッジに
住んでいる。 32年前まで、東京で普通の学生生活を送っていた
私の人生を変えてしまった最初の出会いは、"グランチェスター"であったと
言っても過言でない。この"グランチェスター"との出会いが人生を変えたのは、
私だけはない。かつては、ミルトン、バイロン、ワーズワース、そして、
詩人ブルックとその仲間たち、現在でも、多くの人々がこの場所を愛し、
この場所に集う。そんな日々の風景を、そして四季の移ろいや人々の生活を、
私が撮影した"とっておきの映像"で紹介する。

"グランチェスター"抜きにして、"ケンブリッジ"を語ることはできないと人は言う。
もちろん、"ケンブリッジ"抜きにして、"グランチェスター"を語ることもできない。
今回は、"ケンブリッジ"と"グランチェスター"の32年を語る。

Seminar Abstract:

32 years in Cambridge

It was January 1975, when I arrived at Cambridge for the first time.
My intention was not a long stay for study in this university town
but to look around the world. I was a postgraduate of a University
in Tokyo. I was not an artist or a photographer yet.
I was just a sightseer. Later, I encountered many chances
and extended my stay year by year, I was allowed to stay as an artist
and have remained in Cambridge until today.

When I look back on my 32 years' stay in this medieval town,
although some college scenes remain almost the same all the time,
the world has not been monotonous at all. I realized the changes
clearly as I looked at the town and people's lives.
When I came to Cambridge in the beginning of 1975,
Vietnam War was still on,the Iranian revolution was yet to take place,
and many Iranian people were seen in town.
It was rare to see students or sightseers from China or Korea.
Exchange rate for a pound was almost 800 yen.
Bus ticket cost me only 10 pence. I was able to see a film
at Arts Cinema for as little as 20 pence.

There was no PC or Internet in this world. Nobody had expected
such rapid revolution of IT. Bubble economy had swell and burst in Japan.
Mrs. Thatcher changed structure of British society. Relationship
between Japan and UK or Cambridge University also had to change.
And English climate has changed too. English winter used to be severe
and the River Cam froze over some times.
I remember some cheerful students cycled on the frozen river.

I am going to show photographs and video of most interesting scenes
and talk about my 32 years in Cambridge.
Cambridge University 800th anniversary is two years away
and many projects are in progress. I hope my 32 years experiences
are long enough to change your impression on Cambridge.

Cambridge, the historical university town, and Grantchester
set among meadows beside the River Cam, and once loved by poets such as
Wordsworth, Tennyson, Milton, Byron, Sylvia Plath and Rupert Brooke --
The colleges and meadows remain the same from those days,
but the wind and the sky change the scenery at every moment.
